Chairman and Managing Director

Michael Battersby is a co-founder, Chairman and Managing Director of Maelgwyn Mineral Services Ltd (MMS), based in Cardiff, Wales. He has 40 years’ experience in the minerals industry in operations, general mine management, technical consulting and corporate development. An early career in various gold, diamond & base metal operations in Africa, Europe, South America and Australia was followed by over 20 years work in commercialising innovative technology. In 1997 he co-founded MMS with inventor and engineer Dr Rainer Imhof. Mike is Chairman of a number of associated international companies including Maelgwyn Mineral Services Africa Pty Ltd (MMS 48%) and Maelgwyn Australia Pty Ltd (MMS 100%). In addition, he is also a director of Greenhills Technologies International Ltd. A privately owned mining and processing company looking to develop gold projects within Europe.

In 20 years MMS has become one of the leading technology development companies in the minerals processing industry. The company has invented, patented, developed and commercialised a range of different technologies and processes in the areas of froth flotation and gold processing. In 2001 MMS won the SmartWales award for the development of the G-Cell pneumatic flotation system. In 2006 the company won the “Celebration of Innovation” award for having the most innovative product to come out of Wales for the previous 25 years.

Mike has degrees in Mineral Processing (Cardiff University, Wales) and Entrepreneurship & Innovation (Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne Australia). He is a Chartered Engineer and is a Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (London), the Australian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy and the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME (USA).

In 2012 Mike was appointed a director of the Coalition of Energy Efficient Comminution (CEEC) and in 2018 made chairman of the organisation. CEEC is a not for profit industry led international organisation whose aim is the acceleration of awareness of the industry to improve energy utilisation in the major area of comminution (size reduction).

In addition, Mike has previously sat on the boards of both the British Triathlon Federation (BTF) and its associate member, Welsh Triathlon Limited. The BTF is recognised as one of the world’s leading sporting NGB’s in areas of governance and leadership, whilst it has been the most successful triathlon nation at the last two Olympic Games. Mike also participates in the sport at age group level. He is a former British Age Group Champion, multiple Welsh Champion and has represented team Great Britain at both the European and World Triathlon Championships over a number of years
