Founded in 1997, Maelgwyn Mineral Services Ltd (MMS) is an expanding independent company and a world leader in product and process innovation in the field of mineral processing and environmental technology. The company has patented technology in a number of areas including for froth flotation, gold leaching and mineral liberation.

MMS is based in Cardiff, Wales – Europe’s youngest capital city. The companies’ projects are world-wide, so overseas travel is the norm for company personnel.

THE ROLE

Maelgwyn is a project partner in the EU-funded Horizon project entitled Innovative low-impact supply of critical raw materials from the Copperbelt (MUKUBA). This project, commenced in June 2026, and is focused on bioleaching of copper tailings in pilot scale. Maelgwyn will be responsible for work packages 2 and 7. The role is to support the company’s inputs for the duration of the project, which is approximately 3 years. Thereafter, the opportunity exists to continue employment within the greater Maelgwyn group.

This role will be based in Freiberg (Germany). The successful candidate will be required to work closely with our existing representative. 

The role of the process metallurgist will be sample preparation, pretreatment using the Aachen high-shear reactor and Imhoflot flotation cells, preparing reports and presenting results during the project assemblies. The position will be based in Germany and the person has to fly overseas for the project meetings and site visits. The person will be responsible for further internal R&D activities as well. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Performing test work in laboratory on interdisciplinary subjects
  • Conducting laboratory tests using Ro-Star ultrafine grinding unit, high-shear Aachen reactor and Imhoflot fltoation cell 
  • Analyzing, documenting, reporting and presenting the results to the project team members/managers
  • Well organized and disciplined in running metallurgical tests practically 
  • Programing and managing sampling campaigns for on-site pilot scale trials
  • Communicate with other project partners under defined work packages to meet the requirements for deliverables

Requirements  

  • MSC degree in Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering and/or Material Engineering 
  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience working in laboratory and mine-site as a metallurgist 
  • Fundamental and practical knowledge on pre-treatment, grinding, and flotation processes 
  • Having in-depth knowledge on chemical, mineralogical and analytical techniques 
  • Ability to work  both independently and as a team member 
  • Problem-solving mindset and enthusiastic to find new approaches in recovering CRMs from tailings 
  • Good English speaking and writing skills
